Trustees to join our Board
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Board of Trustees of Homemaker Southwest. We are now recruiting new trustees to complement the skills of existing Board members. As a member of our committed and enthusiastic Board, you will help shape the future of the charity.
Homemaker Southwest is an independent charity, established in July 2001 and based in Devon. Funded by local authorities, utilities, social landlords and grants, our aim is to help those who are in need, hardship or distress and specifically those threatened with homelessness. We employ 12 staff, including money advice and debt caseworkers, who fulfil our mission in a variety of ways, including;
· the assessment of what someone needs to maintain their home
· provision of advice and support according to individual circumstances, which may include making sure they get the benefits to which they are entitled
· help with budgeting, paying bills, sorting out rent arrears, and dealing with debts
· accompanying clients to court hearings regarding rent arrears
· assistance with moving into a property.
The work our staff do is licenced by the Financial Conduct Authority
The Board and Trustee Role
We are looking for people who feel passionate about our mission of enabling people, especially those who are vulnerable, to set up, maintain, and sustain their homes, and thus prevent homelessness. We believe that everyone has the right to a safe, secure, and affordable home; everyone has the right to be treated with respect, whatever their circumstances.
As a registered Charity, Homemaker is governed via a non-remunerated Board of Trustees in accordance with the requirements laid down by the Charity Commission. The Board of Trustees makes key decisions for the charity in addition to driving the longer-term strategy of the organisation.
There are usually 4 - 6 Board meetings a year (4 on Zoom, usually 16.00- 18.00 and in person once or twice a year, usually in Exeter).
Candidates should be able to demonstrate the ability to work effectively and collegially as a member of the Board. No prior experience as a Trustee is required.
The Trustee appointment is a voluntary role.
For further information, and to arrange an initial informal discussion, please contact the Chair of the Board, Richard Cresswell at chair@homemakersw.org.uk
